Under the patronage of his Excellency; the Secretary General of the Higher Council for Science and Technology

Under the patronage of his Excellency; the Secretary General of the Higher Council for Science and Technology Dr. Khalid Elshuraydeh and the head of the European delegation in Amman Dr. Joanna Wronecka, the “SRTD II" project was officially launched at the Millennium Hotel - Amman on Monday the 9th of June, in the presence of a number of Jordanian researchers from various sectors, and representatives of the private and industrial sector. Horizon 2020, The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation the biggest EU programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020), was also introduced and launched in this meeting, along with an overview of the available grants and the application procedure.

SRTD II is the second Phase of the “Support to Research, Technological Development and Innovation in Jordan” Project in Jordan. It is managed by specialized team at the Higher Council for Science and Technology.

Just like SRTD I, the overall objective of SRTD II is to increase the contribution of Jordan’s Research & Technological Development and Innovation sectors to Jordan’s economic growth and employment.

The specific objectives of the project are to:

a) Further develop Jordan’s applied research and technological capacity with a focus on the commercialisation of RTD results for use by the private sector, especially SMEs

b) Continue the integration of Jordan into the European Research Area.

The total allocated budget of the three year project is €5,300,000 (EU Contribution is €5,000,000 and Government of Jordan in kind contribution (HCST) is € 300,000).

The project will take a thematic approach for delivering its results. Four Key Areas of Water, Energy, Food and Health are defined as the most important themes to focus on. They fit into Jordan’s national research priorities. The sub-areas will be defined within the first months of the project.

SRTD II will have four major components; Research Support, Commercialization Support, administrative Support and the Key Areas of Water, Energy, Food and Health.

The three Expected results of SRTD II are:

·        Increased levels of applied research, targeted towards the agreed priorities and needs of Jordan, and often developed in partnership with the private sector, leading to commercially viable and valuable output.

·        Increased numbers of registered patents, spin-out companies, joint ventures and technology licenses created as a direct result of research activities.

·        Strengthened links between European Union and Jordanian research and commercialisation activities.

To achieve the expected results, many activities will be conducted as:

  1. Define research needs based on national R&D priorities, FP7 priorities, and input from the private sector.
  2. Build the Capacity of the Thematic National Contact Points that were created in SRTD-I.
  3.  Support Applied Research and Commercialisation Activities through a Grant Scheme; SRTD II will provide up to €25,000 of co-funding contribution to approximately 60 grants, 40 applied research project and 20 for Intellectual Property and Commercialization proposals. The Call for proposal was launched on the ninth of June 2014, in line with the official Kick-off Ceremony.
  4. Strengthen the capability of the Technology Transfer Network Units, specifically within research organization.
  5.  Deliver increased awareness to Researchers & the Private Sector regarding the value of research to business
